At the Heritage Academy Gateway, administrators aren't the only ones who observe classrooms regularly and provide targeted coaching. New teachers are encouraged to observe their colleagues' classes to learn new techniques and skills they can take back to their own classrooms. New teachers also have instructional mentors to help them learn the school's culture as well as provide extensive development opportunities.

According to Mrs. Lopez, remarkable teachers diligently research standards, adjust curriculum maps, and refine lesson plans rather than repeating the same thing year after year. Master teachers employ a growth mindset and are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to improve their skills.

For new teachers, she stresses maximizing every resource for growth. This means:

Mrs. Lopez shared how one master teacher she observed had students scattered across the floor, lying at her feet - completely engrossed in a math lesson. She highlighted that excellent learning can look very different across great teachers' classrooms.

With over 25 years of experience training, coaching, and leading teachers, Mrs. Lopez has deep wisdom to share.

Cultivating Caring Relationships
The foremost habit of extraordinary teachers is nurturing caring relationships with students. As Mrs. Lopez shared, the most important thing is for teachers to truly care about their students and develop appropriate connections with them.

Students need to know their teacher sees and values them as individuals. This can be done with small actions and can really demonstrate teachers' care and concern. Some things a teacher can do are:

• Greeting students warmly each morning
• Making eye contact and listening attentively
• Getting to know students' stories and interests
• Noticing if a student seems upset
• Offering specific encouragement and praise
• Communicating belief in students' potential

When students feel loved and understood, they give their best effort. Mrs. Lopez told a powerful story exemplifying this. Her students refused to miss class with a beloved teacher. As she put it, "They were like, 'No, it is important for us to be in there. She needs us in there to work with us and do what we need.'" What a testament to that teacher's gift for relationship-building that their students didn't want to miss their class for something that could probably be considered to be 'more fun'.

Students yearn to connect with teachers who care. Master teachers recognize each student's inherent value. They tune into individual needs and struggles. Their concern goes beyond academics to nurture the whole person.

Classroom Management Matters
After relational skills, exceptional teachers' second superpower is maintaining engaged, orderly classrooms. As Mrs. Lopez articulated, "If your content is on point, if you're the best chemistry teacher or history teacher in the whole world, if you can't control your classroom, it doesn't matter."

Without effective classroom management, impactful instruction stalls. Master teachers thoughtfully engineer their learning environments. They:

• Establish clear expectations and procedures upfront
• Involve students in co-creating guidelines
• Reinforce routines consistently
• Redirect off-task behavior promptly
• Apply consequences evenly
• Cultivate a focused, respectful tone
• Organize seamless transitions
• Arrange spaces intentionally

At the Heritage Academy Gateway Campus, teachers and students collaborate to design class rules and norms at the start of each year. Giving students a voice invests them in expectations.

Master teachers recognize that although it might not seem like it, students crave predictability. Consistency allows students to thrive. As Mrs. Lopez explained, "They are able to thrive when the environment is structured and when the teachers are consistent."

Discipline issues evaporate when routines are ingrained. Mrs. Lopez noted that when guidelines are clear and reinforced uniformly, students take ownership of classroom culture. They hold themselves and peers accountable creating a more equitable classroom.
