4 More Things You Didn't Know About School Choice
Last week, we shared insights from my enlightening conversation with Jenny Clark, a member of the Arizona State Board of Education and founder of Love Your School, about the transformative power of school choice. Jenny's passion for empowering parents and her firsthand experience with Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) shed light on the many ways expanded educational options are changing lives.
If you haven't yet read "5 Things You Didn't Know About School Choice," I encourage you to start there before diving into four more key takeaways from my discussion with Jenny.
1. ESAs Are a Lifeline for Students Facing Unique Challenges
One of the most inspiring aspects of ESAs is how they enable parents to craft solutions for children whose needs are not being met by traditional schools. Jenny shared stories of students struggling with anxiety, depression, bullying, and learning differences, who are now thriving thanks to the flexibility afforded by ESAs.
Whether it's accessing one-on-one tutoring, specialized therapies, or simply a learning environment better suited to their needs, ESAs empower families to prioritize their child's well-being and create a customized education plan. For students with disabilities, this can be utterly life-changing. The ability to direct funds toward the specific services and supports a child requires - without jumping through the hoops of an IEP in the public system - is helping kids make progress that once seemed out of reach.
2. Parents Are Driving a New Era of Educational Innovation
With ESAs, parents are becoming influential investors in the education marketplace, driving a wave of innovation in learning tools and approaches. Jenny likened ESA families to "our own little venture capital firm," eagerly trying the latest research-backed resources and sharing what works within parent communities.
She described how a cutting-edge smartwatch designed to help children regulate emotions sold out after being recommended in an ESA Facebook group. This influx of parent-directed funding incentivizes education entrepreneurs to develop new solutions to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Many of the most promising innovations, from specialized therapies to novel assistive technologies, are emerging outside the traditional system - but may eventually be integrated into public schools as demand grows. With ESAs, every parent has the power to "vote with their dollars" and accelerate the arrival of a new era of personalized learning.
3. Learning Doesn't Just Happen Within Classroom Walls
For students who have experienced trauma, are battling medical challenges, or simply learn differently, taking a break from formal schooling to focus on healing or pursue alternative learning opportunities can be incredibly beneficial. ESAs make it possible for families to embrace these non-traditional paths without sacrificing their child's education funding.
Jenny emphasized that kids are incredibly resilient and will not fall irreparably behind for taking time away from the classroom when needed. By removing the pressure of arbitrary grade level benchmarks and enabling students to explore their passions, ESAs help reframe education as a lifelong journey rather than a one-size-fits-all conveyor belt. With the world of knowledge now accessible through technology, learning is no longer confined to the four walls of a school building - a liberating shift for many students and families.
4. School Choice Transcends Partisan Divides
Despite often being portrayed as a political football, Jenny stressed that support for school choice bridges partisan and socioeconomic divides. Families seeking alternatives to their zoned school run the gamut from low-income to affluent, conservative to liberal. The one thing they have in common? A commitment to doing what's best for their individual child.
The challenges ESAs aim to solve - whether bullying, learning differences, or a poor school fit - impact children from all walks of life. Increasing educational options is really about expanding opportunity and allowing all families to access the choices previously reserved for the privileged few.
As Jenny put it, "We're talking about parental empowerment," a unifying goal that can bring together strange bedfellows. Educational freedom may be a rare issue around which Americans of all stripes rally in today's polarized climate.
Navigating the Growing Landscape of Educational Opportunities
Every child deserves an education that enables them to thrive, and every parent deserves the freedom to make that education a reality. For a growing number of families, ESAs are providing an essential lifeline—a means to take control of their child's learning journey and access opportunities once they are out of reach. While not every family will opt for an ESA, the very existence of this choice is sparking a wave of innovation that stands to benefit students in all learning environments.
Whether you are considering alternatives to your child's current school or curious to learn more about the expanding ecosystem of educational options, I encourage you to explore the resources available through LoveYourSchool.org and other school choice organizations. The more parents are empowered with knowledge and choices, the brighter the future for the next generation of learners.
